Professional move, 2–3 BR home. Summer +20–30%.
Texas charges no state income tax, versus a top rate around 2.95% in Indiana. For most movers that means a meaningful bump in take-home pay.
Texas's effective property tax rate (1.4%) is higher than Indiana's (0.76%). If you plan to buy, weigh the extra annual cost into your budget.
Texas averages 13°F warmer than Indiana. Lighten your wardrobe, plan for air conditioning, and pace outdoor tasks on moving day.
Indiana does not ask you to surrender a plate you no longer use. The BMV says to remove the plates from a vehicle you sold, along with any expired plates. It says returning them to the BMV is not necessary. To throw a plate away, bend or cut it so it is permanently unreadable and unusable. Keeping a plate does not keep the registration valid. An unexpired sticker does not let you drive the car past your new state's deadline.

Once the vehicle is registered in your new state, apply for a credit or refund. Use the Application for Vehicle Excise Tax Credit / Refund (State Form 55296), authorized by IC 6-6-5-7.7. Attach a copy of the new state's certificate of registration or registration receipt. Also attach the Indiana certificate of registration if you still have it. File one form per vehicle. Vehicle Excise Tax, Recreational Vehicle Excise Tax, and the county and municipal vehicle excise taxes all qualify. The refund must be at least $4.00 to be paid, and $3.00 is deducted as a processing fee. For an out-of-state registration, the check is mailed once the application is processed, with no 90-day wait.
Source: Indiana BMV, Vehicle Registration Fees & TaxesIf you received income while living here, file Form IT-40PNR for the year you leave, not the resident IT-40. IT-40PNR is the part-year and full-year nonresident return. You also need it in any later year with income from an Indiana source, such as rent on a house you kept or income from a business here. The annual deadline is April 15. When that falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day.
Source: Indiana DOR, Individual Income Tax OverviewEvery county levies its own income tax on top of the 2.95 percent state rate. Where you lived on January 1 sets the county rate for your whole taxable year. Moving away in February does not move you to a cheaper county or out of county tax. Employers are told to keep withholding at the January 1 county rate. The rule also catches commuters. If you live outside the state on January 1 but your principal place of work or business is in an Indiana county, you owe that county's rate. Rates range from 0.5 percent in Porter County to 3.0 percent in Randolph County.
Source: Indiana DOR, Departmental Notice #1The homestead deduction does not come off the roll by itself, and reporting is your duty. File a Notice of Change of Use of Property (Form HC10/CU, State Form 54890) with the county auditor. IC 6-1.1-12-37(g) requires this within 60 days after the property stops qualifying. The form asks for the parcel number, whether all or only part of the property is now ineligible, and a description of the change. A change in use or title can disqualify the property or require a new filing. So this applies when you rent the house out, not only when you sell it.
Source: Indiana DLGF, Notice of Change of Use of Property (State Form 54890)The Department of Revenue treats you as a full-year resident if you keep your legal residence here from January 1 through December 31. Physical absence alone does not end that. For someone who spends the winter elsewhere, it names these factors: keeping a legal residence here and intending to return for part of the year, keeping the Indiana driver's license, and keeping Indiana voting rights. A temporary stay elsewhere leaves you a resident for the whole time you are away. If the move is permanent, close those ties on purpose. Each one is evidence that you still live here.
Source: Indiana DOR, Individual Income Tax OverviewYou can drive on a valid, unexpired out-of-state license for up to 90 days after you move here. This covers licenses from another US state, a US territory, or a Canadian province. If you hold one of those, you surrender it at the office and skip the knowledge and skills exams. The application asks for proof of current Texas registration for every vehicle you own. Register the car before you apply for the license.

Bring your insurance card and proof of ownership, such as the title or registration from your previous state. You do not have to title the vehicle here, but a first-time registrant still completes Form 130-U. The state fee is $50.75 plus $1 for the TexasSure insurance verification program. Your county adds its own charges.
Source: TxDMV, New to TexasSince January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles no longer need a safety inspection before registration. Emissions testing is a separate rule, set county by county. These counties require a passing emissions inspection first: Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson. Commercial vehicles still need a passing commercial inspection everywhere in the state.
Source: TxDMV, Register Your VehicleTax Code Section 152.023 charges a flat $90 on a vehicle you bought outside the state and brought in. It applies only if the vehicle was already registered in your name somewhere else. Pay it to the county tax assessor-collector when you title or register. It is due within 30 calendar days of the vehicle first being used here. You get no credit for sales tax already paid to another state. If the vehicle was never registered in your own name, the flat $90 does not apply. You owe motor vehicle use tax instead, on the purchase price or on 80 percent of the standard presumptive value.
Source: Texas Comptroller, Motor Vehicle Tax Guide: New Resident TaxState law requires at least $30,000 of injury coverage per person, $60,000 for everyone injured in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage. The Department of Insurance warns that these minimums will not cover a multi-vehicle accident you cause or a totaled car that belongs to someone else. You pay the rest yourself. If you still owe money on the car, the lender will require collision and comprehensive coverage.
Source: Texas Department of Insurance, Auto insurance guideTexas has no state property tax. Property is assessed and taxed locally, so this form goes to the appraisal district in the county where the property is. File Form 50-114, generally between January 1 and April 30 of the year you are claiming. School districts must give a $140,000 exemption on a residence homestead. Any taxing unit may add a local option exemption of up to 20 percent of appraised value, with a $5,000 minimum. If you buy after January 1, you can qualify for the applicable part of that tax year right away. This works only if the previous owner did not already take the same exemption for that year.
