Printable Moving Checklist

A checklist only helps if it survives an actual move. These are the parts that do.

• Real dates on every task. "Book movers" is easy to ignore. "Book movers by the week of March 14" is not.
• A room by room packing tracker, because by week three you will not remember whether the hall closet is done.
• A supplies list with quantity columns, so you stop buying packing tape three separate times.
• One page of phone numbers: mover dispatch, landlord, utility start dates, and the new building loading dock rules.
• Blank rows at the bottom of each section, because every move throws up a few tasks no template could have predicted.

The checklist lives on your phone right up until moving day, when the battery is at 12 percent and both of your hands are holding a box.

• Paper works at the new place before the wifi is on and sometimes before the power is.
• Anyone helping you can read a page taped to the wall. They cannot read your phone.
• Crossing a line out by hand sticks in your head. Tapping a checkbox mostly does not.
• The binder is where the lease copy, the mover estimate, and the deposit photos end up anyway. The list belongs in the same place.

• Add household details like pets or kids to pull in the tasks those actually require.

Most free moving checklist templates and moving plan templates are one static PDF handed to everyone. A renter moving across town gets the same page as a family driving from Ohio to Arizona with two dogs.

• A template says "transfer utilities". A dated checklist tells you which week to call, before the new provider runs out of installation slots.
• Interstate moves carry license and vehicle registration deadlines that start counting from the day you establish residency. In-state moves do not.
• Pets and kids change the timeline, not only the task list. Vet records and school transfers have their own lead times.
• You can cross rows off a printed template, but you cannot make it re-date itself when the closing slips a week.
