What This Move Means for You

Higher cost of living

Arizona runs about 21% more expensive than Tennessee overall. Budget extra for housing, groceries, and day-to-day costs before committing to a new place.

New state income tax to plan for

Tennessee has no state income tax, but Arizona's top rate is about 2.5%. Factor the change into your take-home pay and monthly budget.

Much drier climate

Arizona is far drier than Tennessee — roughly 42" less precipitation a year. Expect to adjust to lower humidity and drier air.

Before You Leave Tennessee

You have no final Tennessee income tax return to file

Tennessee does not tax wages or salaries. The Hall income tax on interest and dividends was repealed for tax periods that begin on or after January 1, 2021. Do not file a Hall return for those years.

Ask your county clerk about your Tennessee plates

Tennessee license plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle. The Department of Revenue does not say what to do with them when you move out of state. Ask your county clerk before you destroy or turn in your plates.

Do not expect a refund for unused registration

Generally, Tennessee does not refund the unused part of a registration. A tag cannot be refunded after its registration period starts. You may get a refund only if you return new tags before your old ones expire. The state refunds only its share. Ask the county clerk about the county share.

Check the professional privilege tax if you keep a Tennessee license

Some professionals licensed or registered to practice in Tennessee pay a $400 tax each year. This includes attorneys, lobbyists, investment advisers, broker-dealers, and securities agents. The tax is due June 1. The tax is owed by people licensed or registered to practice in Tennessee. If you keep that license after you move, check whether you still owe it.

Ask your county election commission to remove your registration

Tennessee registration is permanent until the county election commission removes it. Send a written request to the commission to remove your name. The commission also removes you when it gets written confirmation that you registered in another place.

Title and register the car in person at an MVD office

Bring a signed Title and Registration Application (Form 96-0236) and the out-of-state title. If a lender holds the title, bring the out-of-state registration instead. In the Phoenix and Tucson areas, also bring an emissions compliance form. Bring a lien clearance if it applies. For a leased car, bring a power of attorney from the lessor.

Pass an emissions test first in the Phoenix and Tucson areas

Residents of the Phoenix and Tucson areas must have their vehicles pass an emissions test. So must people who commute into those areas for work or school. A new resident in the area must pass the test before registration, unless the vehicle is exempt. Vehicles are exempt for their first five years of registration. All-electric vehicles are exempt, but hybrids are not. At the test station, show the title or registration and your residence address.
