Overall costs in Florida are about 11% higher than in Texas — enough to notice on housing, but not a dramatic change.
Florida's effective property tax rate (0.78%) is lower than Texas's (1.4%) — a plus if you're buying a home.
Florida gets about 24" more precipitation a year than Texas. Waterproof gear and covered parking are worth having on arrival.
Texas does not tax individual income, so leaving creates no part-year return and no final filing. This cannot quietly change in a future legislative session. In 2019, voters added Article VIII, Section 24-a to the state constitution. It bars the legislature from taxing the net incomes of individuals, including an individual's share of partnership and unincorporated association income.

Form 50-114 says the owner must notify the chief appraiser in writing. The deadline is May 1 of the year after the right to the exemption ends. Send the notice to the appraisal district in the county where the property is.

File the transfer notification within 30 days. You then cannot be held responsible for the buyer's parking tickets or toll violations. This matters most when you trade the car to a dealer. A dealer does not have to title it in the dealership name, so the vehicle can stay in your name for months.
Source: TxDMV, Buying or Selling a VehicleOnce you live in another state, that state expects the vehicle registered there. Renewing the Texas registration does not satisfy its rules. Texas no longer requires a safety inspection to renew a non-commercial vehicle. In the 17 emissions counties, a passing emissions inspection is still required before renewal, which is hard to arrange from another state.
Source: TxDMV, Register Your VehicleTaxing units start mailing bills in October, and payment is due on receipt. In most cases the deadline is January 31. Anything unpaid on February 1 is delinquent, with penalty and interest. A unit must give you at least 21 days to pay after mailing the original bill. So a bill mailed after January 10 has a later delinquency date. If you still own property here after the move, update the mailing address so the bill reaches you.

Living here for more than six consecutive months also counts. From then, you have 30 days to get a Florida driver license. Apply in person at a local office that offers driver license service, and take a vision test. The initial Class E license fee is $48.00. Most Tax Collector offices add a $6.25 service fee.
Source: FLHSMV, New ResidentYou have 10 days from establishing residency to title and register a vehicle. That is shorter than the license deadline. A vehicle not already titled in Florida also needs its VIN verified on form HSMV 82042. A Florida notary, a licensed Florida dealer, a law enforcement officer, or a tax collector compliance examiner can sign it. They must first inspect the number under the windshield and in the door jamb.

The minimums are $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 of Property Damage Liability. Coverage must stay in force for the whole registration period, even if the car sits unused. If you keep your current insurer, ask the agent to convert the policy to a Florida one.
Source: FLHSMV, Florida Insurance RequirementsFlorida charges its 6 percent use tax, plus any county discretionary sales surtax, on a vehicle brought in within six months of purchase. If you already paid 6 percent or more elsewhere in the US, nothing more is due. If you paid less, you owe the difference. A vehicle used in another US state or territory for six months or longer before it arrives is presumed not bought for use in Florida. You need documents showing that six-month period to claim this.
Source: Florida Department of Revenue GT-800025If you buy a home and make it your permanent residence, the homestead exemption takes up to $50,000 off the assessed value. It also caps how fast the assessment can rise. You must own the home and live in it as your permanent residence on January 1. File form DR-501 with your county property appraiser by March 1 of that tax year. Many county appraisers accept the application online. Have these ready: your Florida license number, Florida plate number, Florida voter registration number, a declaration of domicile, and proof that you gave up your previous license.
